All you want to know about Google Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL

Google has launched a range of new and upgraded products at its Pixel launch event held in San Francisco on October 4. The products that were launched include Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones, Google Home Mini, Google Home Max, upgraded Daydream View, Google Pixel Buds, Google Pixelbook, and Google Clips.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai kicked off the event discussing some insights and its modern machine learning approach called AutoML short for Automatic Machine Learning which has turned to be more successful over its traditional machine learning approach. All Google executives focussed on one thing i.e. AI + software + hardware, a combination of technology that powers all the products. All “made by Google” products are powered by machine learning and artificial intelligence driven by Google Assistant.

In this article, we will be discussing second gen Pixel smartphones named Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL. For details on other Google products, head over to our separate posts- Google Home Mini & Google Home Max.


Pixel 2 smartphone comes at a starting price of $649 while the Pixel 2 XL starts at $849. Both the devices will be made available in six countries- the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, India, Australia, and Germany. The devices will also be made available in Italy, Singapore, and Spain by the end of this year. In India, the Pixel smartphones will be available to buy via Flipkart exclusively and also from authorized offline stores located across the country. The 64GB Pixel 2 variant has been priced at Rs. 61,000 while the 128GB variant comes with a price tag of Rs. 70,000. On the other hand, Pixel 2 XL will cost you Rs. 73,000 for 64GB variant and Rs. 82,000 for the 128GB variant. Pixel 2 is available in three color options- Just Black, Clearly White, and Kinda Blue, while the Pixel 2 XL is available in two color options- Just Black and Black & White.

The Pixel 2 sports Cinematic 5-inch (127mm) FHD (1920×1080 pixels) AMOLED display with 16:9 aspect ratio, the pixel density of 441ppi, 16.77 million colors, and comes protected with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. While the Pixel 2 XL sports Fullscreen 6-inch (152mm) QHD+ (2880×1440 pixels) pOLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio, the pixel density of 538ppi, 16.77 million colors, and comes protected with 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Both the devices feature all-aluminum body with hybrid coating and Always-on display. The Always-on display shows date, time, weather, and also automatically displays the details about the song playing nearby.

Both Pixel smartphones are powered by 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core (4 cores @ 2.35GHz + 4 cores @ 1.9GHz) SoC paired with Adreno 540 GPU and 4GB LPDDR4x RAM. The all-new Pixel devices come in two internal storage variants- 64GB & 128GB with unlimited online storage for photos and videos. Both devices run pure Android 8.0 Oreo and pack fingerprint sensor on the rear side which is claimed to be fastest in comparison to other smartphones.

Both devices feature a 12.2MP rear camera with 1.4-micron pixels, autofocus with laser plus dual pixel phase detection, optical plus electronic image stabilization (OIS + EIS), f/1.8 aperture, and is capable of 4K video recording @ 30fps. The camera on the Pixel smartphones has scored 98 DxOMark which is the highest ever. The Pixel smartphone also packs portrait mode produced by a single camera while other smartphones use dual cameras for the same. It has also been optimized for Augmented Reality to provide seamless AR experience. Google also introduced a set of AR stickers including Stranger Things which can also be used while capturing photos. These stickers are not still instead they move and perform some particular actions and you can use more than one such sticker at the same time. Both the devices also pack 8MP selfie camera with 1.4-micron pixels, f/2.4 aperture, fixed focus, and also supports portrait mode.

The newly launched Pixel devices also sport squeezable sides which when squeezed performs a specific set of functions that can also be customized. You can activate Google Assistant or take selfies by just squeezing the sides of the smartphone. The smartphones also come with Google Lens that lets you search what you see. With Google Lens, you can scan images for email IDs or phone numbers, scan screenshot for information, or look up books, movies, albums, music, or artwork, all by scanning the object with Google Lens.

With Google Assistant, you can control your smartphone and interact with it using your voice. Take a selfie, call friends and family, text your dear ones, turn on/ off connectivity options like Bluetooth, set reminders or alarm, or navigate home without touching the smartphone. The smartphones also pack high-definition stereo front-firing speakers that supports Wireless HD audio with LDAC, Qualcomm AptX and AptX HD audio codecs. Both Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL comes with IP67 water and dust resistant rating and supports fast charging rated to fuel up the battery for up to 7 hours in just 15 minutes.

Pixel 2 packs 2700mAh battery while the Pixel 2 XL comes with 3520mAh battery. Connectivity options on board Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL include 4G LTE, WiFi 2.4G + 5GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ GLONASS/ BeiDou/ Galileo, NFC, eSIM, USB Type-C port, and single nano-SIM. Sensors on the smartphone include proximity, ambient light, Active Edge, accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, barometer, hall effect sensor, android sensor hub, and advanced x-axis haptics for sharper/defined response.

Google also introduced wireless earphone named Google Pixel Buds just like Apple’s AirPods. Pixel Buds are powered by Google Assistant which can be activated by just tapping on the Bud. It also supports gestures for interface and control and real-time multi-lingual translation. Users can swipe back and forward to control the volume or tap on either of the buds to play/ stop the music.

“Say you’re in Little Italy, and you want to order your pasta like a pro. All you have to do is hold down on the right earbud and say, ‘Help me speak Italian.’ As you talk, your Pixel phone’s speaker will play the translation in Italian out loud. When the waiter responds in Italian, you’ll hear the translation through your Pixel Buds,” explained Google. It supports 40 languages including Hindi.

The earbuds come with a case which features inbuilt battery to fuel up the buds for up to 24 hours. It connects automatically to Pixel devices or any other Android device running Android 7.0 Nougat or above with Google Assistant. The Google Pixel Buds are priced at $159 (approx Rs. 10,000) and now available to pre-order in the United States. Google is offering its wireless earphones in three color options- Just Black, Clearly White, and Kinda Blue.
