Facebook seals a deal with Warner Music for an enhanced music experience

Facebook recently signed deals with Sony Music and Universal Music, two of three major music label groups, to provide its users a more personalized music experience. And now, the social media platform has added the third biggie to the list- Warner Music Group (WMG).

The social media giant recently announced an initiative that allows its users to use licensed music in their posts on its platform which followed deals with Sony and Universal music groups. Now with Warner Music’s catalog, users will soon be able to enjoy sharing moments and memories in more creative ways.

Warner Music Group, like other two labels, has agreed to share its recorded music and music publishing catalogs with Facebook for use in a social experience such as videos and messages. Facebook will no longer take down posts containing portions of licensed music over copyright violations as the “deal paves the way for fans to create, upload and share videos with licensed music from their favorite artists and songwriters.”

In this way, everyone will get benefited. Facebook won’t have to take down posts over copyright violations and hence will attract creators to create stuff for its platform without any worries. Users/Page owners will be able to share their thoughts, creations, and moments using licensed music. Label owners get an opportunity to commercialize their business in a more effective way and as Ole Obermann, WMG’s chief digital officer said- “fan-created video is one of the most personal, social and often viral ways that music is enjoyed, but its commercial potential is largely untapped.” Musicians and songwriters as well will make some revenue out of it.

Music from these labels can be used in social experiences across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Oculus. Well, under the deal with WMG, both companies will work together to develop products that will enable users to personalize their music experiences. List of artists signed to Warner Music Group includes some iconic names like Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, the Eagles, Nina Simone, Jay-Z and the late Prince.

“The team at Facebook is creating a truly innovative product and is showing real commitment to its participation in the growth of the music business. We’ve taken our time to arrive at the best possible deal, one that recognises the value that music creates on social networks, while empowering our songwriters to reach audiences around the world, in a way that will spark creativity and conversation among their fans,” commented Eric Mackay, EVP, Global Digital Strategy, Warner/Chappell.

“When Facebook and music come together, we have the power to bring people closer together.  Music brings to life the happy, the sad, the throwback and the funny in all the moments and messages we share with friends,” said Tamara Hrivnak, Head of Music Business Development and Partnerships, Facebook.
