Yesterday, one of the deadliest terrorist attacks took place in Lethpora, Pulwama district of Jammu & Kashmir which is about 30km away from Srinagar, 42 CRPF personnel were martyred and several others were critically wounded when a suicide bomber from Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) group rammed explosives-laden vehicle into CRPF bus.

This terror group is led by the international terrorist Masood Azhar who has full freedom to operate and expand his terror infrastructure in the territories which are under Pakistan’s control and to carry out attacks in India.

“Attack on CRPF personnel in Pulwama is despicable. I strongly condemn this dastardly attack. Sacrifices of our brave security personnel shall not go in vain. The entire nation stands shoulder to shoulder with the families of the brave martyrs. May the injured recover quickly,” said PM Narendra Modi in a statement.

Many of the martyrs were returning from leave to rejoin their duty in the valley and there was no movement on the highway for the last two days due to bad weather conditions and other administrative reasons. The convoy of around 2,500 troopers started from Jammu at 3:30 am and was expected to reach Bakshi stadium camp in Srinagar before sunset, said officials.

Police enquired that the suicide bomber driving the vehicle named Adil Ahmed from Kakapora joined the Jaish group in 2018. He was driving the vehicle which was packed with explosives on the wrong side of the road and hit the bus of 39-44 personnel, said an official at the spot. JeM claimed that the terrorist drove the SUV carrying 350kg of explosives, which Indian authorities did not confirm. The powerful explosion was heard 10km away, including some parts of Srinagar adjoining Pulwama.

Body parts could be seen scattered around the area. Most of the bodies are disjointed and mutilated making it difficult for doctors to give the approximate number of casualties. Also, officials are finding it difficult to identify the body of a particular martyr. The bus that was the focus of JeM belongs to the 76th Battalion of the force. The country is full of aggression because of this heinous and despicable attack.

The cowardly terrorist attack on brave soldiers in Pulwama has been condemned by the Government in the strongest possible terms. In accordance with this act, India has withdrawn the most favored nation status from Pakistan and this will badly affect the economy of Pakistan in the near future. “Terrorists have made a big mistake. They will have to pay a very heavy price and I assure everyone that the forces behind the attack will be brought to justice,” said PM Modi.

U.S. lawmakers and U.N. Secretary also condemned the terrorist attack by Pakistan-based terrorist group- “We call for those behind the attack to be brought to justice,” a UN Spokesperson for Secretary Antonio Guterres said.

“We stand with the people of India in condemning the terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir and send our condolences and prayers to the victims families. We must all stand up against these jihadists and their ideology,” Democratic Congresswoman and Presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard said.

The country is demanding a second surgical strike for this intolerable and abhorrent act. Tension may rise between India and Pakistan in the coming days. Satya Pal Malik, J&K governor, said the fact that Jaish owned up to carrying out the attack indicated that Pakistan may have had a hand in it.

“This is a bigger attack than Uri. Unlike the Uri attack, a Pakistan-based terror group has claimed responsibility There will be much more pressure on Pakistan, but my hunch is, because a Pakistan-based group has claimed responsibility, New Delhi too, will have to act. The form and shape of the retaliation will be the government’s prerogative,” said General DS Hooda, former Northern Army commander.
