As part of Narendra Modi’s smart city project, Cars and Buses will not be allowed in national city’s heart Connaught place. The aim is to reduce pollution and congestion in the area. As per the ban, large and small four wheeler vehicles will not be allowed in the area for three months starting February.
Specifically, cars and other heavy vehicles will be blocked from entering into the inner and middle circle of Connaught place. The area built by Edwin Lutyens in 1933 will be barricaded till April last.
However, you will be provided with an option to park your vehicle and ride on a bicycle. Alongside the cycle service, battery powered rickshaw’s will also be provided from the surrounding parking areas at Shivaji Stadium, Baba Kharak Singh Marg and Palika parking. According to the police, the total parking capacity at these locations is 3,172, but, only 1,088 vehicles are parked on an average.
According to the Union Minsiter, Venkaiah Naidu, the ban will offer accident free, crime free, and congestion free environment to visitors. The pedestrianisation of the area will help monitor the effects on traffic and the all over parking management, said the Ministry of Urban Development. The ministry will also record the feedback of pedestrians and business holders.
To recall, Smart City project was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year in June under which 20 cities were selected.
