Xiaomi Mi 5c launched with company’s own SoC “Surge S1”

Xiaomi unveiled a new smartphone, a successor to Xiaomi Mi 4c- “Mi 5c” in China that comes assembled with company’s first in-house SoC called Surge S1. Mi 5c is the first device to feature company’s own processor which is built on the 28nm process and clocks at up to 2.2GHz. It has been priced at CNY 1,499 (approx Rs. 14,500) and will be available in company’s home country starting March 3 in Black, Rose Gold, and Gold color options.

Let us first talk about the all new SoC that company has developed in 28 months. It’s an octa-core 64-bit processor clocks at up to 2.2GHz, more specifically, four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocks at 2.2GHz and remaining four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocks at 1.4GHz. It comes integrated with a Mali-T860 quad-core GPU which is 40 percent more power efficient in comparison to Mali-T760.




The SoC also packs 32-bit DSP for better voice processing and dual microphones for noise cancellation. It has also been integrated with 14-bit dual ISP and Xiaomi’s own Surge ISP algorithm to improve camera light sensitivity by up to 150 percent. It also features upgradable baseband and programmable modem architecture. Company also claims that Surge S1 is better in performance when compared to Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 and MediaTek Helio P10 & Helio P20 SoCs.

Getting on to the phone’s specifications, Mi 5c sports 5.15-inch FHD (1080×1920 pixels) curved glass display with a pixel density of 428ppi. It is powered by Surge S1 paired with 3GB of RAM. It comes with 64GB of internal storage and runs on company’s own UI called MIUI v8 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, however, the smartphone will soon be getting Android 7.0 Nougat update, maybe sometime in March.

The smartphone features 12MP rear camera with f/2.2 aperture, PDAF (phase detection auto focus), and LED flash. On the front side it sports 8MP sensor with f/2.2 for taking selfies. It’s a dual-SIM (Nano + Nano) smartphone that packs 2860mAh battery with fast charging support. It also sports fingerprint sensor embedded in device’s home button. It also packs standard connectivity options such as Wi-Fi 802.11 ac dual-band, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS/ A-GPS, USB Type-C 1.0, FM Radio, and 3.5mm audio jack. Sensors on board Xiaomi Mi 5c include- magnetometer, proximity, ambient light, gyroscope, and accelerometer.
