Android Oreo has finally arrived, all you need to know

Google has finally revealed Android O at an event in NYC and it was just minutes after the total solar eclipse swept across the United States. It was really a wonderful natural phenomenon that happened for the first time since 1918 and we too had a great view via NASA’s live stream. Here’s the highlight of the event that everyone was looking for- Android O is officially Android Oreo.

Following its tradition, Google unveiled the official statue (can be seen in the image above) for the latest Android OS, Android Oreo. Besides the name, the company also announced that Android Oreo has been made available via Google’s Android Open Source Project. Pixel and select Nexus devices users will soon get the Android 8.0 Oreo update.

Android 8.0 Oreo is much more user-friendly, secure, and smarter than any other previous Android OS versions. It has many interesting features on board such as cleaner notifications channel, picture-in-picture mode enabling users to watch a video in a resizable and movable window atop any other app you are currently using.

In terms of performance (as measured on Google Pixel), Android Oreo has 2x faster boot load time and it also helps you minimize the background activity in the apps you use least. Autofill has also been upgraded, now it remembers your logins (with your permission) to quickly get you into any app.

The latest Android OS has also introduced ‘Notification Dots’ that appears on every app icons you to notify you that it needs your attention, you can easily clear them by swiping away. There is another feature called Android Instant Apps that lets you teleport directly into new apps straight from your browser without installing them.

It also features Google Play Protect which scans your entire device for malware and misbehaving apps and hence keep you and your data safe. It even scans over 50 million apps per day on the app store that you haven’t installed yet. It’s a great step towards protecting the interest of people as malware attacks are increasing day by day and the greatest way, nowadays, to penetrate into users database is through apps.

With Android Oreo onboard, you also get a longer battery life than ever. Google has focused on enhancing user experience and to boost device’s performance with its latest Android O. Other features that have been upgraded or introduced are 1.) ambient screen showing notifications with larger font, highlighted app name and instant access to actions, 2.) background execution and location limits, 3.) adaptive icons letting developers feature full-bleed square shaped icon, 4.) integrated printing support, 5.) high-performance audio, 6.) notification snoozing, allowing users to snooze/ hide notifications for a period of time, 7.) Wi-Fi Assistant that auto-connects users’ device to high-quality open WiFi and secures your connection with a VPN back to Google.

Project Treble has also been introduced which is according to Google the biggest change to the foundations of Android to date. It’s a modular architecture “that makes it easier and faster for hardware makers to deliver Android updates.” There are a lot of upgrades and added features that you can experience only when you get your hands on Android 8.0 Oreo and for that, you have to wait for weeks or maybe months.

As per Google’s analysis, near about 14 percent of devices are currently running Android 7.0 Nougat which was introduced last year. As mentioned earlier, Pixel and select Nexus devices owners will be first among others to experience Android Oreo, with build currently in testing. If your device is eligible, it will be months before you finally get to experience all new Android O.

Smartphone manufacturers like Sharp, Sony, Samsung, Essential, General Mobile, HTC, Huawei, Kyocera, Motorola, and LG will make the Android 8.0 Oreo update available by the end of 2017 to eligible devices. We may be getting some new devices featuring the latest Android 8.0 Oreo, launching in the first week of September at IFA trade show.
