MS Dhoni Steps Down As Captain of Team India

Mahendra Singh Dhoni quits as captain of ODI (One Day International) and T20 International Cricket teams but he will be available for the selection for the series against England starting January 15. Dhoni had announced his retirement from Tests earlier in December 2014.

MS Dhoni has informed BCCI that he wishes to step down as the captain of the Indian Cricket Team from the One Day Internationals and the T20 Internationals formats of the game, however, he will be available for the selection for the ODI and T20I series against England and the same has been conveyed to the Senior Selection Committee, said BCCI.



MS Dhoni has captained Team India in 199 ODIs, 72 T20Is, and 60 Tests. On calculating, Dhoni has captained 331 international matches which no other captain has. Ricky Ponting is at second position after Dhoni with 324.

“On behalf of every Indian cricket fan and the BCCI, I would like to thank MS Dhoni for his outstanding contribution as the captain of the Indian team across all formats,” said Rahul Johri, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), BCCI.

“Under his leadership, Indian team has touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket,” he added further.

Team India has won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007, the ICC ODI World Cup in 2011, ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 under Dhoni’s captaincy. It will be interesting to see who will lead Team India after Dhoni.
