Indian Government & Google To Work Together For Online Safety In India

Ministry of Consumer Affairs has tied up with tech giant Google to raise awareness and better the online security system in India. They will kick off “Digitally Safe Consumer” campaign to protect the online interest of consumers.

Here’s what Chetan Krishnaswamy, country head (Public Policy) at Google India, said- “With the rapid increase in digitization across all spheres, the message of internet safety needs to be integrated into the everyday tasks that the consumer undertakes online. Thsi initiative will add to our existing campaigns guiding users to navigate the web and manage their digital lives safely and leverage the web to the fullest.”

“We will work together towards advocating digital security and privacy needs through ‘Digital Literacy, Safety & Security’ workshops through a ‘Train the Trainer’ model for approximately 500 people including 250 consumer organisations across the country,” said the company.

With its campaigns and workshops, Google India with Govt. will provide required information and training on online safety to the people of the country. As the company said ‘Train the Trainer’, after training the trainers across the country, these trainers will further forward the information on Internet Safety and will also train the local people.

The “Digitally Safe Consumer” campaign is expected to roll out from January 2017. It aimed to “reach out with training materials to over 1,200 consumer organizations as well as consumer affairs department of every state and union territory,” said Google India.

Google India had previously launched the “Web Rangers” initiative to spread awareness among youngsters across India. The company is still working with schools across India to help spread awareness through its Web Rangers initiative. Google, in collaboration with Data Security Council of India, will run a special information security awareness program for small/ medium sized enterprises and Consumer voice to train community across the country.
