Redmi Y2 supports Face Unlock, powered by Snapdragon 625

Xiaomi has launched the successor to Redmi Y1 in India called Redmi Y2 alongside the global version of its custom ROM MIUI 10 which will start rolling out later this year to select Xiaomi smartphones. Redmi Y2 is actually Redmi S2 that was launched in China last month.

The smartphone comes in two storage configurations- 3GB/ 32GB and 4GB/ 64GB priced at Rs. 9,999 and Rs. 12,999 respectively. It will be available to buy via Mi.com, Mi Home (located across the country), and Amazon India in three color options- Rose Gold, Gold, and Dark Grey. The first sale is scheduled on June 12 at 12 noon and will be shipped with a complimentary soft case which the company claims to be slim and durable, splash and dust-resistant.

Launch offers include instant Rs. 500 discount when you buy Redmi Y2 using ICICI Bank debit/ credit card. This discount offer is valid for the first sale only. Telecom partner Airtel is offering Rs. 1800 instant cashback and up to 240GB free data. To avail Rs. 1800, you have to recharge with Rs. 199 or Rs. 448 prepaid packs and you will get 36 discount coupons worth Rs. 50 each into your My Airtel account which can be used for further recharges. You can avail these offers only if you buy the smartphone online via Mi.com and Amazon India.

The smartphone sports 5.99-inch HD+ (720×1440 pixels) 18:9 display with a pixel density of 269ppi, 70.8 percent NTSC color gamut, and on top of the display is the Corning Gorilla Glass. Xiaomi Redmi S2 is powered by a 2.0GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core SoC paired with Adreno 506 GPU and your choice of RAM- 3GB/4GB. It comes in two internal storage options as mentioned above which can be expanded further up to 256GB via MicroSD card.

Camera department includes dual rear camera setup comprising of 12MP (f/2.2 aperture and 1.25-micron pixels) primary sensor and 5MP secondary sensor, paired with LED flash. The setup offers AI portrait mode, HDR, facial recognition, low-light enhancement, face recognition, and PDAF (phase detection autofocus). On the front, the device sports 16MP (f/2.0 aperture) 79.8-degree wide-angle selfie (Super Pixel) camera that comes paired with AI-based beautification tech and offers Beautify 4.0, precise bokeh effect powered by AI, and auto HDR. There is also a 4500k soft-toned selfie light on the front for better low-light photography. The Super Pixel tech combines four pixels into a single large pixel and hence reduces noise and captures more light in low-light conditions.

The smartphone runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based company’s own UI called MIUI 9.5 and supports Face Unlock system. There is also a fingerprint sensor which has been placed at the back. Design-wise, the smartphone is slim and sports decorating lines on top and bottom of the rear panel and measures 160.73×77.26×8.1mm. It also features some newly added gestures to make one-handed operation easy, such as swiping from bottom quickly will take you directly to the home screen, swipe from the bottom to top and pause to open recent apps, and swipe right from the edge to go back a screen. 

Xiaomi Redmi Y2 accepts two SIMs (Nano), has a dedicated slot for the microSD card, and packs 3080mAh battery. Connectivity options onboard the smartphone include 4G VoLTE, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.2, IR blaster, FM Radio, GPS/ A-GPS, micro USB port, and 3.5mm audio jack. Sensors on the smartphone include proximity, accelerometer, ambient light, magnetometer, and gyroscope.
