Government set the upper age limit at 32 for UPSC Civil Services Examination

The upper age limit for civil services examination conducted by UPSC is fixed at 32 years, said Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh. The upper age limit is considered on the basis of DoPT (Department of Personnel & Training) guidelines. The rule is equally applicable to all the aspirants and therefore, the question of being unfair does not arise.

Every year thousands of aspirants appear in the civil service exam which is conducted yearly by the UPSC (Union Public Service Commission). The exam is divided into three stages- preliminary, main and interview- to appoint officers to Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS).

As on August 1, 2018, Thursday, the Union Government notified the Rajya Sabha that the upper age limit for Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2018 has been decided to be 32 years for all the aspirants. Age limit will be relaxable for reserved category as well as for disabled aspirants. Relaxation will be 5 years for scheduled caste (SC) and scheduled tribes (ST),  3years for other backward class (OBC) and 10 years for disabled candidates.

The UPSC exam is categorized into two parts- Paper-I in the morning and Paper-II in the afternoon. To qualify the exam, candidates are required to score 33 percent in Paper II of UPSC Prelims for UPSC Main Exam. The qualified candidates will have to submit the DAF (CSM) online on the official website: upsc.gov.in.

More than half-a-million young men and women appear for the laborious examination every year that results in less than a one in 400 chance of a successful outcome. And those who succeed often don’t score more than 50% in the main or level 2 examination. So for the relaxation, the limit on a number of attempts is also provided by the board i.e. for General category, six attempts are permitted (or 9 if he/she is disabled), OBC category candidates are allowed nine attempts and there is no limit in case of SC and ST category till 37 years of age.
