11 Indian Fishermen Detained By Sri Lankan Navy

11 Indian Fishermen along with their trawlers were detained by Sri Lankan Navy on November 19. According to the Navy, they were found fishing near Sri Lanka’s Neduntheevu Island in Sri Lankan waters north-west off the coast Jaffna’s Delft islet.

All the arrested fishermen belongs to Tamil Nadu. Around 3,500 fishermen went out for fishing into the sea from Rameswaram on Saturday night.




As per Tamil Nadu police and state Mechanised Boat Fishermen Association leader P Sesuraja, Those fishermen were detained by Sri Lankan Navy and were taken to Kangesanthurai Port along with their two boats.

Sri Lankan Navy also chased hundreds of other fishermen by pelting stones and bottles but failed to catch them. Earlier this November, India and Sri Lanka together decided to set up a Joint Working Group (JWG) on Fisheries to meet every three months and hold a meeting every six months between the Ministers and Fisheries in New Delhi, if needed. The meeting will hold talks on fishermen’s issues and to find their permanent solution.
