DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) has successfully test-fired a new generation nuclear-capable ballistic missile – Agni Prime aka Agni P. Agni Prime Missile adds to India’s array of nuclear-capable ballistic missiles strengthening the country’s defense even further.
The missile was test-fired from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam island off the coast of Odisha, Balasore at 10:55 am on June 28, 2021. Agni Prime is a canisterised and advanced variant of the Agni class of missiles with a range capability between 1,000 and 2,000 km. According to DRDO, the missile followed textbook trajectory and has met all the mission objectives with a high level of accuracy.
“Various telemetry and radar stations positioned along the eastern coast tracked and monitored the missile,” said DRDO in a statement.
Being a canister-launched missile, Agni P offers Armed Forces the operational flexibility enabling them to transport it anywhere they want when needed. Agni Prime missile received a complete technology upgrade, said officials.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO “for the maiden successful flight test of Agni P, an advanced variant of Agni class of missiles. I compliment the efforts of the team behind this mission.”
With Agni P, many advanced technologies including Composites, Propulsion systems, innovative guidance and control mechanisms, and state-of-the-art navigation systems have been introduced. “The Agni P missile would further strengthen India’s Credible Deterrence capabilities,” the Defence Minister added.
Last week on June 24th and June 25th, DRDO, R&D wing of the Ministry of Defence, had also successfully tested enhanced range versions of indigenously developed Pinaka and 122mm Caliber rockets.
