Google's Pixel 4a might support 5G connectivity: All we know so far

A lot of leaks and rumors have already been surfaced all over the internet about Google’s budget smartphone Pixel 4a suggesting that it will be the company’s best-designed Pixel smartphone to date in terms of the screen-to-body ratio.

Most of the pixel devices up until now featured thick bezels around the screen which made the smartphone look really dated (apple being another culprit). With the state of the art camera post-processing algorithms and pure stock android experience, it always seemed that Google has been focusing more on improving camera software and user experience to compete with rivals like Apple and Samsung, rather than design aesthetics up until now.

With the latest renders of the Pixel 4a, thanks to @OnLeaks and 91Mobiles, it is clear that Pixel 4a will feature a punch-hole selfie camera (which Samsung loves to call as Infinity-O) and very thin bezels around the edges giving out room for more screen, better screen-to-body ratio and modern looking aesthetics. For instance, the renders indicate that Pixel 4a will feature a square rear camera module housing a single camera sensor, just like what Apple did with iPhone 11 models.

The story, however, doesn’t end here. The clues for 3 new pixel devices have been found in the open-source Android code by XDA Developers (Kudos to Mishaal Rahman for the same). These devices have been codenamed as Sunfish, Redfin, and Bramble.

Further analysis of reports suggests that the phone codenamed Sunfish will come equipped with a good mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 processor. While Snapdragon 765 will power up the Redfin and Bramble models offering enhanced performance and not just this, the processor comes with a built-in 5G modem, so, it is safe to assume that we are going to see a 5G smartphone from Google this year.

The fact that a mid-range Google smartphone featuring 5G, however, doesn’t make sense because the more expensive high-end Pixel 4 doesn’t come with 5G and launching a lower-priced variant of the already launched smartphone with upgraded features isn’t the taste of Google or for say any other company. It can be assumed that the only potential candidate for Pixel 4a is Sunfish which comes with Snapdragon 730 chipset. The other devices, Redfin and Bramble would make sense for Google 5 series i.e. Google Pixel 5a as by that time Pixel 5 would already have 5G.

Regardless of what Google is up to, it is certain that we are going to see better-looking smartphones from Google this year which will serve as an overall attractive package rather than just being the best camera smartphones of 2020.
