Netflix has given the green light to an animated series set in the universe of “Stranger Things,” even as the popular live-action series is slated to end after season 5. Co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer have confirmed that the show’s universe will continue to expand, though details about the premise and voice cast are currently under wraps.

A teaser that reads “The adventure continues…” suggests that the story will take place after the events of season 5. The Duffer Brothers have stated that the animated series will have the feel of ‘Saturday morning cartoons,’ staying true to the original show’s 1980s setting.

According to a statement released by co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer, they have always envisioned an animated version of “Stranger Things” inspired by the Saturday morning cartoons of their youth. They expressed their excitement at the realization of this dream and praised Eric Robles and his team for their incredible scripts and artwork.

The animated series will be developed by Flying Bark Productions, an Australian animation team known for their work on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “What If…?”. The Duffer Brothers will serve as executive producers under their Upside Down Pictures banner, which was established in 2020.

Although the animated Stranger Things series is the first spin-off to receive the green light from Netflix, there are a few other upcoming projects in the works from the Duffer Brothers. These include a London stage play set in the Upside Down universe, titled “Stranger Things: The First Shadow”, as well as another unnamed live-action spin-off. “Stranger Things” season 5 is also slated to begin filming in May, as announced by Noah Schnapp, who portrays Will Byers in the show, during an Instagram live session.

The release date for Stranger Things season 5 is expected to be in 2024, as announced by Netflix. In November, the show’s creators revealed the title for the first episode, “The Crawl,” and confirmed that the majority of the season will be set in Hawkins as the characters delve into the history of the parallel world known as the Upside Down. This is where creatures like the Demogorgon and Mind Flayer originate from before entering the real world.
