H3N2 Influenza Outbreak: Schools To Remain Closed Till March 26

The cases of the H3N2 Influenza virus are rising across the country. The H3N2 Influenza virus which normally circulates in pigs has now infected humans. The sudden outbreak of the virus creates panic among the citizens as ICU admissions are rising, and kids and the elderly remain the most affected.

Symptoms of this virus are similar to Covid-19 so the doctors have advised to extreme precautions and masking to prevent the spread of the virus. Other than H3N2, the country is also witnessing a surge in COVID-19 and swine flu infections.

With this outbreak, “the Puducherry government on Wednesday announced a holiday for all schools up to Class 8 from March 16 to March 26,” declared Puducherry Education minister A Namassivayam. The UT has reported 79 cases of H3N2 Influenza till March 11.

Health department officials are advising people not to panic. Officials in the UT have made arrangements at hospitals and primary health centers to keep a check on rising cases.

What is H3N2 Influenza Virus?

It is a subtype of the influenza A virus that is responsible for causing seasonal flu epidemics in humans. The H3N2 virus is highly contagious and can be transmitted through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

H3N2 Influenza Virus Symptoms?

The symptoms of the virus are similar to those of other types of flu and can include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue. In some cases, it can lead to severe respiratory illness or pneumonia, especially in older adults, young children, and people with weakened immune systems.

H3N2 Influenza Virus Prevention?

Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent H3N2 influenza. Each year, the influenza vaccine is updated to include the most common strains of the virus that are expected to circulate during the upcoming flu season. It is recommended that everyone six months of age and older receive an annual flu vaccine, particularly those at high risk for complications.
