Cook meat and poultry to the appropriate temperature to kill bacteria. Avoid leaving food out in the sun for more than two hours, or one hour if the temperature is above 90°F.

Insect Bites and Allergies

Summer is the season of mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects, which can cause bites, rashes, and allergies. Insect bites can cause itching, swelling, and pain, and some insects, such as ticks, can transmit diseases, such as Lyme disease.

To prevent insect bites and allergies, use insect repellent with DEET or another EPA-approved ingredient. Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, and socks when spending time outdoors, especially in wooded areas or near water. Check yourself and your pets for ticks after spending time outside. If you have allergies to insect bites, carry an epinephrine auto-injector with you and seek medical attention immediately if you have a severe reaction.
