On Monday, a five-year-old girl from the Raichur district has become the first confirmed victim of the Zika virus in the state. A few months ago Zika virus cases were found in Kerala, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.
The Health Minister of Karnataka also made it clear that there is no need for any worry or concern, as the government is taking all the necessary measures, and will also be issuing a set of guidelines. The concerned authorities made it clear that no other fresh cases of Zika virus have been found so far in the state and there is no need for any worry.
What is Zika Virus?
It is a mosquito-borne illness, transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes, which bite mostly during the day. Cases of this viral disease globally declined from 2017 onwards.
Symptoms:
Most people with the infection do not develop symptoms. Among those who do, they typically start 3–14 days after infection, which includes rash, fever, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache, and usually lasts for a few days.
Prevention:
People with symptoms should get plenty of rest, drink fluids, and treat symptoms with antipyretics and/or analgesics.
For now, there is no specific treatment available for Zika virus infection or disease. Protection against mosquito bites during the day and early evening is a key measure to prevent Zika virus infection.
