The sudden Covid outbreak in China threatens the health safety of its neighboring countries. Keeping this in mind, India has strengthened its surveillance to keep any spike in infections at bay. As per the report, thirty-seven million daily cases were registered in China on December 20.

“RT-PCR test for the detection of Covid-19 would be made mandatory for international passengers arriving from China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Thailand,” said Union health minister Mansukh Mandav.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting to review the Covid-19 situation in India, amid a Covid scare triggered by the alarming surge in cases globally, especially in China. At the meeting, PM Modi urged everyone to wear masks in crowded public places.

The Centre has already issued an advisory to check the spread of the virus, which includes a random sampling of 2 percent of foreign passengers, effective today onwards. Furthermore, mock drills will be conducted across India starting next week to monitor the Covid-19 preparedness of healthcare centers.
