Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras, developed an operating system ‘BharOS’ for mobiles. It is an Android Open Source Project based operating system. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday tested the operating system.

BharOS, unlike the Android, doesn’t have the default applications and services or what we call, ‘Bloatware’. It focuses more on security and privacy, which implies that users will not be forced to install applications that they are unfamiliar with or the user do not trust.

IIT-Madras incubated firm JandK Oprations Private Limited (JandKops) develops this operating system by keeping in mind the security and privacy that other operating systems doesn’t have.

The India-Made operating system can be installed on commercial off-the-shelf handsets. For now BharOS services are currently available to organisations and users that have stringent privacy and security requirements.

However, there are no confirmation on when it will be released and what are the procedures to install the operating system. The company claims that the BharOS is better than both Android and iOS, and can provide better battery life.
